In a a generic explanation, “The Cloud” refers to any software based solution that doesn’t reside at your physical location. Think of some Software as a Service (SaaS) models, such as Quickbooks online. So rather than having a server at your office that hosts Quickbooks that your computers are connected to in a local area network, that server is hosted someplace else, and your users connect to it. There’s more to it, of course, dealing with the intricacies of scalability, redundancy, shared computing power, and portability, but for all practical purposes you can think of it as an offsite server network.
